Clinical Activities
There are about 300 cardiac admissions annually, 2,400
outpatient visits (including regional clinics), 400 inpatient
consults, approximately 100 catheterizations, 3000 echocardiograms
and 4000 ECG's. Surgical and intensive care services
provide surgical and post-operative care for all forms
of cardiovascular disorders in children. Over 120 open
and closed cardiac cases are done each year by two surgeons.
Adult patients with congenital heart disease are followed
in a teaching clinic jointly staffed by Pediatric (IWK)
and Adult (Queen Elizabeth II Health Sciences Centre
- QE II) Cardiologists. Electrophysiology and ablation
procedures are performed at the QE II facility. Fetal
Echocardiography is a joint service with Diagnostic Imaging
and Maternal Fetal Medicine. The cardiology medical
staff work closely with the cardiovascular surgeons,
intensivists, and neonatologists for patient care.
