As the only children's hospital in Maritime Canada, with
a catchment area of 1.8 million, the major focus of the
Department of Pediatrics is the provision of secondary
and tertiary care for the children and youth of Maritime
Canada. Clinical care is provided within 15 clinical divisions
and 2 clinical services.
Clinical care is primarily provided within the IWK Health
Care Centre, located in Halifax, Nova Scotia. The IWK
facility has beds for 101 adults, 110 babies
and 121 children, and approximately 5,000 babies are delivered
there each year.
While some care must be provided within the IWK Health Care Centre, the Department
of Pediatrics has a philosophy of providing care "closer-to-home." To achieve
this goal, clinical care professionals provide in excess of 200 days per year
of outreach clinics within the Maritimes. In addition to providing care in the
child's community when possible, the professionals within the Department of Pediatrics
maintain close working relationships with regional pediatricians, family doctors
and other health care professionals in the child's home community. The Department
continues to develop alternative methods of care in consultation with community
care providers to enable care "closer-to-home."

care mission within these divisions and their specific clinical and academic
interests. |
