The IWK Health Centre is the main location for the
Dalhousie University pediatric residency program. Our
residency program is extremely competitive and we attract
residents from across the country. We provide all four
years of training for the resident to be eligible for
The Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada
Fellowship Examinations. We accept four or five first-year residents
through the Canadian Resident Matching Service every year.
As well, we will often have one or two excellent international
medical graduates in each year of training. Residents
complete their four years of General Pediatrics or may
do three years in General Pediatrics and then start their
subspecialty training.
We are committed to giving residents a well rounded
training in General Pediatrics. As well as rotations
through the pediatric inpatient unit, NICU, PICU, and
Emergency Medicine, our residents also do mandatory
rotations in Community Pediatrics as well as at the
Saint John Regional Hospital for a general consultant
pediatric inpatient and outpatient experience. Residents
have selectives each year to do varying pediatric subspecialties
and, as well, have elective time that they can take
at other centres if they wish. All residents do mandatory
rotations in Child Protection as well as Developmental
Pediatrics.
